The unique
Stonehaven War Memorial was designed by local architect John Ellis and unveiled in 1923. The design is deliberately unfinished to reflect the lives cut short by the First World War 1914-1918. The site at Black Hill is visible for many miles and from almost every point in Stonehaven. The inscription on the memorial is from poet
Donald Sankey's
"Students in Arms" about the First World War: -
“One by one death challenged them, they smiled in his grim visage and refused to be dismayed.”
These words certainly provide some perspective when we are troubled by the worries of the modern day!
Dunnicaer
is a sea stack just off the coast which lies between Dunnottar and the town of Stonehaven itself.
Isolated at high tide, it is believed to have been a Pictish Hill Fort a thousand years ago. Intricate designs have been found carved into rock during archaeological investigations. These Pictish crescent & triangle motifs have been reflected in our logo.
